Choosing to undergo cosmetic surgery is a significant decision. While many patients are suitable candidates, there are occasions when an independent psychological assessment can help ensure that surgery is being considered for the right reasons, with realistic expectations and a clear understanding of the likely outcomes.
At Cambridge Therapy Centre, we provide independent Psychological Suitability Assessments for Cosmetic Surgery for patients referred by cosmetic surgeons, plastic surgeons and aesthetic clinics throughout the UK.
All assessments are conducted online or by telephone, making the service accessible wherever you are based.
A psychological assessment is not intended to prevent someone from having surgery. Rather, it helps both the patient and the surgeon make an informed decision.
An assessment may be requested where there are questions about expectations, body image, previous cosmetic procedures, psychological wellbeing or other factors that could influence the outcome of surgery.
Our role is to provide an independent professional opinion that supports safe, ethical and patient-centred decision-making.
The standard assessment package includes:
Pre-assessment questionnaires.
Review of any relevant referral information.
A psychological assessment appointment of up to 60 minutes, conducted online or by telephone.
A structured written report summarising the assessment findings and professional opinion.
Submission of the report to the referring clinician within five working days.
During the assessment, a range of factors may be explored, including:
the patient's reasons for seeking surgery;
expectations of the proposed procedure;
relevant psychological history;
body image concerns;
decision-making and informed consent;
psychological factors that may influence surgical outcomes.
Where appropriate, recommendations may include proceeding with surgery, further psychological support, or additional assessment before surgery is undertaken.

Our assessments are conducted independently and are designed to assist the referring surgeon in their clinical decision-making. The assessment does not determine whether surgery will proceed. The final decision remains with the treating surgeon and the patient following the informed consent process.

Most assessments can be arranged promptly, with reports normally returned within five working days. Urgent assessments can also be accommodated where required.
